Opening Day Goes Into Extra Innings, Toros Come Up Short

League City, Texas – After much anticipation and preparation, Opening Day for the Bay Area Toros took off. “I couldn’t ask for any better with the packed house and the crowd cheering,“ Manager Jim Bolt said. The Toros took on the traveling team, Texas Heat, and came up short in the tenth inning with a score of 6-5, the winning run coming in on an error.
Starting pitcher, Steve Hecker had a good feel for the strike zone, fanning six in three innings, but he left a few pitches in the middle of the plate earning him 4 runs. Brandon Sisk had another powerful outing coming off of his last game. He pitched six relief innings (102 pitches), allowed one earned run, got nine strikeouts and three walks. He dominated the entire Heat line-up with the exception of a nearly-robbed homerun. He allowed only two hits for the night. Sisk really shined in the sixth inning, slamming the door on a bases loaded, one-out situation, striking out the next two batters. “Everything felt great,” Sisk said of his pitching, “I could only ask for a win.”
It was another case of missed opportunities for the Toros tonight leaving seven men on – three in scoring position with no outs. “A lot of mental errors is what caused us to lose the game, but it‘s only the first game of sixty,” Bolt said. They did capitalize in the fifth inning with patient hitting and smart base running. Mike Medrano hammered a pitch over the right field wall, scoring three. “In my last at bat, I tried to do too much. In the next one, I stayed short and waited for a good pitch to hit,“ Medrano said. After walking, Josh Odell stole second to put him into scoring position for Kyle Wade’s two out, game-tying RBI double. Marcus Chandler also came through with a two out base hit and the go-ahead run came around to score on an error.
We the exception of mental and physical errors, the team continues to come together more and more each game. “Tonight we bonded well team-wise,” Sisk said of the team and their Opening Day performance.
Tomorrow night is the second game of a three-game series against the Heat and it is also Cap Day. The first 600 in the doors get a free Toros Cap from Christus St. John Sports Medicine.
